'I made a promise - to a friend' - Naruto, Sakura & Lee; ready to well and truly fuck shit up.
Time for me to write one of my longest reviews to date - and it's for a Naruto movie. I refute the idea of good and bad movies from here on out. We're all just as dumb as each other.
This is exactly what I wanted a Naruto movie to be: a fun exploration into the wider world that draws on some of the core themes of the anime, with a likable supporting cast and filler story, and enjoyable fight scenes. I absolutely expected to not enjoy this after the first two Naruto movies (Stone Of Gelel especially - God, that was dreadful), but I was very, VERY surprised to find a movie actually worth watching and reviewing (I do go on a bit here). This is one of those movies I absolutely should have seen as a child, as it was easily the most mature of the original Naruto movie trilogy.
The movie raises several great contentions and issues through it's plot, and does so without ever contradicting the main cast's values. The supporting cast are actually bearable, and offer some interesting worldviews that hadn't been explored in the anime before. The antagonists are fine at best sure, but after 200 episodes of everyone one-upping each other, the enemy threat felt like a balanced one this time around. It was awesome to see Team 7 (with the very welcome addition of Rock Lee) get their asses kicked, only to come back as hard and fast as Lee's insane attacks near the end. Seriously, the fight animation in this movie is some of the best I've seen in Naruto - this is obviously reflective of the movie budget, but for me it was on par with Naruto versus Saskue and the Chunin Exams.
Ninja Clash In The Land Of Snow & Legend Of The Stone Of Gelel felt like they were both working towards what this movie finally achieved. The sum of their parts are what make Guardians Of The Crescent Moon so enjoyable to watch, and then some. This is likely owed to the experience gained in writing for this format, and the larger budget and technological advancements of the time. The theme of 'friendship' has been a common one through these movies, and one that hadn't really been nailed down I felt - until I saw this final entry. It's an endearing, considered take on a very tired theme (especially in anime), and one I will gladly watch again.

Strange thing to pick out, but the extended shots were the camera simply remained still, and focused on a particular subject, were such a stellar choice. It was pleasant to have a moment of breath and space, which allowed for some perfectly timed pacing. There wasn't a point where I grew tired of what I was watching, or struggled to keep up.
This was a great ending to Part 1 of Naruto (excusing the 20 or so episodes I have left to watch), and a perfect conclusion to the initial set of three movies. If the Shippuden movies take any leads from this, then I'm very excited to see them. It was great to see Naruto, Sakura, Lee and Kakashi as they first were before Shippuden, but also building towards that growth that will come in the timeskip.
Not the ending for the first part of the anime, but a very worthwhile milestone of it's final act. I would absolutely reccomend this even if you only have a passing interest in the anime or manga.
